I Have just been through the birth, death & marriage registers & records in Wick Caithness researching my family roots. Without exception except from 1653 to 1780 the name Cogill was first recorded Cogill without the h. There were 2 spelt Coghill, 2 spelt Cogle & and 1 spelt Coggill. As with most names the spelling was in the hands of the recorder of the time although from the repeated recording of the name over such a period I can only conclude that Cogill is the correct spelling & the version Coghill came about as time went on.

Hi! I created the companion category for your name study (Category:Coghill Name Study). Feel free to edit it. The default for the template is to add the main category, but you can add a line to have a different category. See the ONS template page for details. Give me a holler if you have any questions about categorization.

I also created a redirect, so Project:Coghill (the link for the button from the Coghill surname page) brings you to this page.

Cheers, Liz
